The Honolulu Rose Society (HRS) is a non profit organization and affiliate of the American Rose Society. Established in 1975, our society has grown from an original membership of 12 individuals to our current 116 and growing! The HRS is comprised of individuals from all walks of life who share a love for roses.  Echoing the objectives of our parent organization, the aim of our society is to encourage the fostering and culturing of roses here in Hawai'i.

May

Our Mother's Day Rose Show & Sale held on Saturday, May 10, was a successful one again this year!  We were bustling from beginning to end, selling many bouquets and rose plants, answering rose care questions, and talking rose-talk with everyone who stopped by.  Mahalo to all of our volunteers who turned out that day to help make the event a great one!

April

Spring was in the air on April 12th at our Spring Rose Show held at Kahala Mall!  We had many beautiful roses in a rainbow of colors adorning our exhibition-only tables that day.

Not only were the roses colorful, they were fragrant as well!  Our "Most Fragrant Rose" contest was repeated this spring with the public invited to smell the roses and vote for their favorite fragrant variety.  Photos on left, above and below, contributed by M. Yokomichi.

As Marsha Yokomichi reported, there was a total of 269 votes in the "Most Fragrant Rose" contest, with the most popular vote being cast for “Double Delight” grown by Jean Young (photo below, contributed by M.Yokomichi).  Marsha states that, "from the moment we setup to the final moments before breaking down, this contest was a big draw for the public.  We had crowds of people surrounding the entries for most of the day, even after the final votes were collected."

March

"Easy Care for Beautiful Roses" was the topic of our HRS community service event held March 30th at the Iwilei Home Depot.

HRS President Myrna Cariaga gave basic rose culture tips to many interested attendees and shoppers who stopped by.  Other HRS members were present to help answer rose-growing questions.

Myrna's Rootsock 101

"Rootstock 101" was the topic of our workshop following our March 8th meeting.  Our own HRS president, Myrna Cariaga, gave an informative presentation on different types of rootstock, touching on Dr.Huey, Multiflora & Fortuniana rootsocks.

Mini Rose Silent Auction

This month's meeting featured not only a special Friends and Family Membership Promo, but a benefit silent auction on Nor'East miniatures as well!  Those in attendance had a chance to bid on each of Nor'East's new varieties for 2008 and more.

Baldo's Thrips Presentation    Baldo's Thrips Presentation

"Thrips!  Everything you want to know ...and more!" was just part of the excellent presentation given by our special guest, Baldo Villegas after our February 23rd meeting.  Those in attendance were treated to an eye-opening presentation by the well-known Entomologist & Master Consulting Rosarian from Orangevale, CA.  Thrips were covered in depth and all of the other usual and unusual rose pests in Hawai'i made great topics for discussion!
